Most vehicle owners are not aware that it is not necessary to take their 30k, 60k, 90k, 120k mile preventative maintenance service back to the dealer to keep their manufacturer’s warranty in effect.

What is Vehicle Maintenance Warranty?
At certain mile intervals, often made by the manufacturer, fluids, filters and parts need to be replaced so the vehicle stays within the recommended manufactures warranty. Often dealers mislead that this preventative maintenance must be done at the dealership.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which is enforced by the FTC, makes it illegal for manufacturers or auto dealers to claim that your vehicle manufacture’s warranty is void if you have your vehicle’s preventative maintenance done at a qualified local auto shop.

Preventive Maintenance Warranty Tips:

*Read your warranty. Your preventive maintenance warranty schedule is often discussed in your owner’s manual. This scheduled maintenance is recommended at certain mileage intervals to help prevent potential problems for the life of your vehicle. If you have misplaced your owner’s manual, look for it online. Often you can find it in the “Owners” section of your manufacturer’s website.

*Preventive Maintenance Just Doesn’t Mean Oil Changes. Oil changes are also considered preventive maintenance however at certain mileage intervals, 30k, 60k, 90k & 120k, other fluids and parts need replacing or inspection. It is essential to keep up on these recommendations and requirements to ensure overall performance and safety for your vehicle.

*Keep all service records and receipts, regardless of who performs the service. This includes oil changes, tire rotations, belt replacement, new brake pads, and all vehicle inspections. Create a file or obtain a handy folder to keep track of repairs; it will come in handy if you have to use your warranty. If you ever have a warranty claim and it appears that you did not maintain your vehicle, your claim could be denied, so protect yourself and your vehicle.
